C2 Horde Fall Asleep for Five Minutes, Lose to Chaos Black

2011-11-05 Richfield, MN: The C2 Northern Horde decided to take a long shift off, and Chaos turned it into a 5-2 win. The Horde came out of the gates with a ton of energy, but a hot sub goalie kept them at bay after putting up 13 shots in the first period. Six minutes into the second period, Steven Lenzen finally found the twine making a nice move to take the puck away at the left point and race down the ice ahead of the opposite D beating the Chaos goalie in the top left corner. Unfortuneately, the Horde's energy died around the nine minute mark of the period as Chaos put in three goals in a five minute span, two of which came four seconds apart. That stretch was all Chaos needed as the Horde would only score one more after Chris Warlick put in a Jeff Cleath rebound at 11:28 in the third. "This one hurt a bit," said Gary Schwartz, to the media after the game. "We could have won this one as they only outshot us 34-33, but we couldn't stop them during that stretch in the second period." Noted Pete Breener, "the team needed to keep up the intensity and we didn't have it." Schwatz commented, "Zimmerman had a greta pass to the Chaos' Misson in the slot on the fifth goal and I wasn't able to stop it filling the nets with Zach at the bluline. It was just one of those kind of nights."

D1 Northern Horde Beat Arctic Wolves 6-1; Win D1 East!

2011-03-26 St. Paul, MN (Highland Park, north rink). With a short bench and the D1 East title on the line, the Northern Horde stood up to the challenge from a feisty Arctic Wolves team and hung on for a 6-1 win.  Goalie Nathan Kangas forgot his stick and had to borrow one that was for the opposite hand, but that didn't stop him from posting another one goal game.  He stopped 11 of the 12 shots he faced as the four Horde defensemen stood strong to keep the defensive zone clear and trouble at bay.  The Horde offense was very sluggish with the 5 pm Saturday start, but the team rallied when needed.  Chris Brown got the Horde on the board at 13;55 of the first. In the second period, Dan Bolles, who was playing center for the first time this season due to the short bench, put in two goals with Dan Kline picking up the first of three assists on the night for him.  In the third period, Steven Lenzen and Chris Warlick each got on the board and Bolles put in one more for the hat trick.  For Warlick the goal was timely as his wife and kids had just arrived at the game so he was able to flash some skills for time.   It wasn't flashy, but the Horde got 6 of 42 shots past a very solid Wolves goalie who rose to the challenge all night.  The Horde next take on the Muskies on Wednesday night as a tune up before the playoffs.  Needless to say that the Horde will need to play better than it did on Saturday night to have any chance in the playoffs.

D1 Horde Beat Muskies With Late Nelson Goal; Clinch Playoff Spot

2011-02-27 St, Paul, MN (Highland South):  The D1 Northern Horde played a fired up Muskies line-up and came from behind to win 3-2.  The Muskies came out with guns blazing in the first period and pressured the Horde defense.  After a break to fix the game clock, the Muskies got loose in front of the net on a bad line change and went ahead 1-0.  The Horde regrouped midway through the second when Jon Zimmerman put in a rebound off a Jeff Nelson shot to tie it up.  The McDonald-Zimmerman-Nelson line would continue to apply pressure after giving up that first Muskies goal.  After Nelson made a strong play in the corner to dislodge the puck from the Muskies D, Zimmerman took it behind the net and fed Darren McDonald in front of the net.  His shot rebounded to Nelson who put it in on his second attempt from the back post.  "The Muskies goalie was hot tonight, saving everything in sight, and their D was stifling," said Nelson.  The Muskies answered the call in the third period when the Horde D misplayed a puck in the air to tie it up.  At that point it was game on for the Horde.  Wave after wave of Northern Horde lines took it to the Muskies, whose goalie had a performance reminiscent of the Horde's last game against the Diablos.  "Chris Warlick and Steven Lenzen are still shocked at how the Muskies goalie stopped three breakaways from each of them on the night," said Rob Yurko an hour after game time.  Finally, with less than three minutes to go in the game, Nelson got loose on the right side and slid it near post for a 3-2 lead.  The mettle of the Horde D would be tested again when Zimmerman was whistled for interference with only one minute remaining - his first penalty in over 60 AHA games.  "Really?" was the reaction from Dana Cudo, which was very polite compared to the "Are you F*%KING kidding me" from Gary Schwartz.  Chris Warlick and Stevne Lenzen, still shocked at how the Muskies goalie stopped three breakaways from each of them on the night, weren't even aware the Horde pulled out the victory.  As the scorekeeper said to Zimmerman in the box, "They haven't gotten within 40 feet of your goalie in the third period, even man-down I don't think you have anything to worry about."  The Horde next take on the Icedogs in a D2 reunion late on Sunday night at New Hope.

Northern Horde beat outmatched Stars 11-0

Sunday, February 13, 2011, New Hope Arena, New Hope, MN.  In his first of two controversial coaching moves of the night, Captain John Errigo asked Dana Cudo, Rob Yurko, and Dan Bolles to stay home to try to give the Stars a chance during Sunday’s game. It didn’t work, as the Stars were grossly overmatched despite the Horde’s short bench.

The Horde came out strong, and peppered the Stars goaltender with 30 shots in the first 2 periods, 11 of them finding the back of the net. Most Horde players ended up on the scoring sheet, with Steve Lenzen (4) and John Errigo (2) having multi-goal nights. When asked what the most important play of the game was, defenseman Brian Hinderks stated, “It had to be Gary Schwartz’s assist on the 8th goal. That assist single-handedly turned the tide and gave the Horde the confidence it needed to finish with a W.” 

Despite some chippy play by the frustrated Stars, the Horde managed to play a clean game. The most controversial call came late in the game, when Chris Warlick got called for a 2-minute penalty for “trying too hard with an 11 goal lead” – at least that’s what it looked like to the guys on the bench.  

Errigo’s second unorthodox coaching move came at the end of the second period. With the Horde ahead by 11 goals, and having outshot the Stars 30-5 to that point, Errigo appealed to his teammates to ease up and go easy on their rivals. When asked how this locomotive could possibly be slowed down without derailing, Errigo’s advice to the team was to “try play like you’re Jon Zimmerman”. To this, defenseman Tyler LaMont bemoaned, “You realize that we’re only ahead by 11.” Errigo stood firm, and with the Horde playing like an army of Zimmermans, they were outshot in the final period by a tally of 7-3. Despite this late Stars flurry, strong play by goaltender, Nathan Kangas, kept them off the scoring column, as he recorded his league-high 3rd shutout of the season.

D2 Horde Fall Behind Early; Battle Back to Win in Overtime

2011-01-17, Eden Prairie, MN: The D2 Northern Horde came from behind twice to tie the score, ultimately prevailing in overtime at a nearly-empty Eden Prairie ice rink.  The game was tightly contested when the Knights put one past Horde goalie Pete Morrow one minute into a power play.  The Knights struck again less than 30 seconds later by taking advantage of some defensive confusion in the Horde end putting the Horde down 2-0 little more than halfway into the first period.  The Horde started their climb back into it when Shawn Espeseth knocked the puck to Suneel Arora at the point.  Arora’s shot was stopped but Dan Kline knocked the puck past the Knights’ goalie to start the scoring.  “I’m so used to having my back to my own goalie that I almost fired the puck back at Pete,” commented Dan Kline. Just over two minutes into the second period, the Horde tied it at two when Chris Haack centered a pass to Richard “Big Stick” Dargis who knocked a backhand into the net.  Later in the period, the Knights took the lead again when Dmitry Tovb got behind the Horde defense on a breakaway.  The defense did a nice job getting back, forcing a sharp-angle backhand shot which just squeaked underneath Morrow’s waiting glove.  After several extended stretches of pressure in the Knights defensive zone, Joe Lee centered a pass to Mark Paska.  Paska’s initial shot was saved but Ryan Dolan was in the perfect spot to bang home the rebound.  After a friendly chat in front of the Knights’ goalie (a request for further comment from Kline was rebuffed), the teams battled to a regulation tie.  “I skated all the way in from the point because I was hoping to knock some heads together. It figures Kline would wuss out,” said Jeff Cook.  With less ice time remaining than the 5-minute overtime clock would allow, Paska decided he’d had enough and intentionally lost the opening faceoff.  He then methodically picked the puck off the Knights’ defenseman’s stick, walked in alone on the goalie and knocked home the game winner just 14 seconds into overtime.

Strong Third Period Key as D2 Horde Beat Maroons 2-1

2011-01-10, Hopkins, MN:  The D2 Northern Horde overcame the fatigue of the an indescribably long drive out to Hopkins to beat the Maroons in one of the best games of the seasons.  Both teams rose to the occasion and played with ferocity with sixth place in the D2 standings on the line.  The game was a defensive battle all the way, which looked scary for the Horde with Jon Zimmerman subbing for Stan Kruglikov.  However, Zimmerman shocked everyone by not giving up a goal on the night.  Said captian Kline, "We are always nervous when Zimmerman is back there, but with the speed of Joe Lee, we thought he wouldn't hurt us too badly." Through the first period, the Maroons controlled the play, but Richard "Big Stick" Dargis got his second goal of the season with a 140 foot shot from the Horde's defensive blue line as he was getting off the ice for a change.  The puck slipped past a stunned Maroons goalie to put the Horde into the lead.  The game remained scoreless as both goalies turned away shot after shot.  In the third period, the Maroons put a deflected puck past Pete Morrow to tie things up, but the Horde were not through.  Jonny "Clutch" Nygren made sure the Horde would go home winners when he stole the puck at the blue line, made a great move at the left boards to create some space and blasted (sort of) the puck past a stunned Maroons goalie to put the Horde up for good.  After the game, Ryan Dolan expressed his surprise, "I never expected to see Nygren get a goal in that situation.  Usually, he makes a play and then gives the puck back to the other team so they won't be embarassed he just stole it from them.  For some reason, he decided to do something with it tonight."  Despite being outshot 31-17, Pete Morrow was solid all night in picking up another win between the pipes.  The Horde are looking forward to the return of Will Schultz next week to make ensure that no goals get scored from the third line.

Horde D1 Dominate Lakers D1 - Get First Win of the Season

2010-11-06 St. Louis Park:  With another strong performance, the Northern Horde D1 got their first win of the season against the Lakers D1 on Saturday night.  The Horde D was tough once again, limiting the Lakers to 17 shots while putting 32 on the Lakers goalie.  Chris Warlick opened the scoring for the Horde with an unassisted goal only four minutes into the game.  His linemate, Steven Lenzen, got his first goal in the maroon and white six minutes later when he knocked home a pass from John Errigo with Chris Warlick getting the second assist.  In the second period, Peter Small got his first for the Horde with assists to Chris Brown and Tyler LaMont.  Unfortunately, for the Horde, the shutout for Nathan Kangas ended off a deflection in the third period, but that was all the Lakers could do against a stubborn Horde D led by Dan Kline, John Fischer and Rob Yurko, who played his best game to date for the Horde and was tough in the corners all night.  Brian Hinderks picked up a shocking unsportsmanlike penalty at the end of the game, which surprised him as much as the Horde bench, but even a 6-on-4 could not threaten Kangas between the pipes.

Horde Just Miss Championship Game; Playoff Run Caps a Strong Season

April 10, 2010, Bloomington Ice Gardens- The Horde's inaugural winter league season exceeded expectations as the beginner school team finished tied for fourth in the D2 standings and made the playoffs. In the first game of the playoffs, the Northern Horde finally beat the Puck Hounds, with a bruising 5-3 win at New Hope. The Horde came out to play and battled hard all night. Brian Hinderks made a penalty shot that even he didn't know he made until he reached the bench and Brian later capped the win with a beautiful shot from the point. In the second game, the Horde had a lot of chances in the first period but couldn't capitalize and went down 3-1 to a determined Ice Sages at Bloomington. The lone Horde goal was scored by Dana Cudo, her second of the season. On Saturday evening, the Horde needed to win to make the championship and jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period. Unfortunately, two quick penalties put the Horde in a five on three situation and the Nighthawks managed to get two past Pete Morrow. The Horde regained the lead on a goal by Dan Bolles, but the Horde gave one back with five minutes to go in the game. With 2:01 to go, the Horde took a penalty to go down and man. Needing a win, the Horde pulled the goalie with one minute left in the game to skate five and gave up an empty netter with 11 seconds remaining.
Overall, the Northern Horde's initial campaign has to be called a success on all fronts. The team started 0-1-1, but rebounded to finish the regular season 13-5-2 scoring 85 goals while only surrendering 48. The Horde led the league with the fewest penalty minutes and beat every team at least once. The team was very balanced getting key contributions from everyone. Jeff Nelson led the team with 22 goals and 30 points and Dan Bolles added 18 goals and 8 assists. Brian Hinderks and Tyler LaMont combined for 15 goals and 17 assists from the defense. Liam Monahan, Chris Haack and Jon Zimmerman each tallied 10 assists. Jon Nygren, Will Schultz, Mark Paska and Ryan Chester gave scrappy play throughout the season, each contributing with key points and making plays from the wings. Sunneel Arora and Dan Kline were consistent and reliable stay home defensemen who could separate guys from the puck and turn the play back to the Horde's advantage. Dana Cudo was the toughest player on the Horde, getting banged around but always being in the right spot at the right time - definitely the strongest two way player on the team. Gary Speier, Jeff Cook, David Homel and Fin Samson, the team's subs, combined for 9 goals and 13 assists in a combined 34 appearances. And Bill Messinger, while hurt for most of the season, brought a tough edge to the team and rallied the troops against the Diablos with his physical play. Everyone contributed at least two points and Horde D gave up the second fewest goals and second fewest shots in the league. Pete Morrow had a terrific season in goal with a 2.33 GAA and 0.875 save percentage facing 393 shots and posting a 14-6-2 record including the playoffs.
The Northern Horde improved throughout the season and is ready to mount a strong campaign this summer to prepare for next winter. WE WILL BE BACK!

Horde Sweep Blade Runners - Move Into Sole Possession of Second Place

Sunday, March 13, 2010, Eden Prairie (rink 2) – The Northern Horde’s winning ways continued on the big sheet at EP on Sunday night as the Horde pummeled the Blade Runners for a 7-3 victory.  Despite significant pressure on the Blade Runners throughout the first period, the Horde did not light up the scoreboard until Jeff Nelson and Dan Bolles scored back-to-back goals at 4:57 and 2:47 to give the Horde a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.  Nelson would score again on a break-away, followed by a Gary Speier blast at 6:21 of the second period, which would be the game winner.  Bolles and Speier each scored their second of the night in the third period and Tyler LaMont put the game away with 1:56 remaining on a Jeff Cook pass across the crease.  The win brought the Horde to 13-3-2 on the season one point behind the Puck Hounds and two points clear of the Nighthawks with games remaining against the Polar Bears and the Nighthawks.  With the top of the D2 standings bunched, the Horde can finish anywhere from first to fifth.

Horde Blast Ice Sages

Saturday, April 6, New Hope (south rink) - Coming off a disappointing loss to the Maroons 3-2, the Horde came out lean and hungry to dominate the Ice Sages.  With only 12 skaters, the Horde jumped out to an early lead with Dan Bolles scoring at 16:11 and 14:39.  Jon Nygren followed a Bolles shot two minutes later and beat the Sages goalie for a 3-0 lead.  The first period scoring continued with the Horde putting in two more goals and ending the period up 5-1.   Bolles and Jeff Nelson were on fire all night, scoring four goals each and the Horde added a goal from Brian Hinderks with an assist to Tyler LaMont, which helped seal a 10-3 victory.  The Horde defense once again was strong giving up only 22 shots against once of the best offenses in D2.  The Horde return to Breck to face the Diablos on Thursday, March 11.  Hopefully, it’s just like old times.

Horde Look Flat and Lose 4-1 to Puck Hounds

St. Louis Park – Saturday, February 13, 2010. The Horde played an uninspired game against the Puck Hounds and lost 4-1 in front of a small crowd at SLP's east rink. After a week off, the Horde started the game with some energy and, after pressing for most of the period scored their only goal of the night when Jon Zimmerman stole the puck at center ice and fed Jeff Nelson cutting in from the right side to give the Horde the early 1-0 lead. The Horde had a few power plays they were unable to convert and, despite outshooting the Hounds, lost for the second time of the season 4-1 after giving up an empty net goal at the game's end. Credit the Hounds who played a tough defensive game and had a few terrific shots. The Horde face the Wildcats next Saturday and will be hungry.

Horde Faces Tough Chaos Team and Escapes with 1-0 OT Win

St. Paul (Yackel-West Side) – Sunday, January 31, 2010.  After the two teams skated to a 2-2 tie to open the season, the Northern Horde knew they would have a defensive battle on their hands and the 40+ spectators that packed a sold out Yackel arena would not be disappointed.  Tough D and outstanding goalie play were the theme of the night, with Pete Morrow and Chad Guarneri thrilling the crowd with 37 saves between them.  However, after three scoreless periods and 3 scoreless minutes in overtime, Will Schultz got the puck to Tyler LaMont who did the rest taking the puck past half of the Chaos lineup and putting it past Guarneri to give the Horde a victory and take the Horde to 9-0-1 in their last 10 games.  “It was good to see Will do something positive after missing a open net three times the past two weeks,” said Suneel Arora.   Noted defensemen Brian Hinderks, “they were determined and kept bringing the wood all night.”  Schultz remarked “those guys were tough, when I was lying on the ice for the seventh time I really noticed their speed and intensity.”  Dana Cudo, laughing loudly, quipped, “Jon Zimmerman looked like a low level Mite player, instead of the mid-range Mite player he usually resembles, they way he hit the cross bar in the first period from 5 feet out and then shot the puck right into Guarneri’s glove on a breakaway.  Dave Homel could have saved that without pads.  Thankfully we were able to overcome his incompetence with Tyler’s goal at the end.”    Next up, the Horde take on the Puck Hounds who beat the Horde in the second game of the season, the Horde’s only loss this year.  Dan Kline, nursing a sprained right knee, is expected back, along with Ryan Chester who is battling a separated shoulder.  The banged up Horde will need their A game to take down the hot Hounds, who crushed the Wildcats this week.

Horde Fights Off Pesky Loons

Golden Valley (Breck) – Sunday, January 24, 2010.  Playing with a short bench, the Northern Horde fought off a sleepy first period to beat the Fighting Loons 6-2.  In the first period, the Loons controlled the puck and kept it in the Horde end, but only managed two shots in the period against Pete Morrow who stopped one but let the other by at 10:18.  After looking sluggish the rest of the period, Jon Nygren took a Chris Haack pass and buried it with authority to tie the game up.  The second period was back and forth with no one scoring until Liam Monahan won the first face-off of his career right to Gary Speier who deposited the puck in the back of the net before Liam knew he won the face off.  Finally, in the third period, after Dana Cudo left the Horde with 11 skaters, the team woke up from its slumber.  Gary Speier opened the period with his second goal of the night set up by a strong defensive play by Suneel Arora.  Then, Liam Monahan caught a nice pass into the slot from Jeff “I Can Pass Too” Nelson and beat Jon Scholten to put the Horde up 4-1.  Five minutes later, Tyler LaMont sent a nice pass behind the Loons net to Chris Haack in the right corner who fed Jon Zimmerman for a one-timer.  After giving up a goal to the Loons, 10 seconds later Liam Monahan beat three Loons defenders to put the Horde ahead 6-2.   Monahan had 4 points on the night and Speier had three, with each scoring two goals.  At the post-game press conference, defenseman Brian Hinderks noted “We all thought Liam and Nygren could score, they just kept telling us they didn’t want to hurt the goalies.”  Will Schultz, who miss 4 open nets on the night remarked “We were lucky to get out of there with a win – the Loons brought their A game and I am scoring adverse.”  Jeff Nelson commented  “Our one-legged center finally decided to shoot the puck, who knew it would go in?” 

Up next, the Horde face a hot Chaos team that has been crushing opponents of late.  This figures to be a low scoring game as two of the best defenses in D2 go head-to-head.  The teams skated to a 2-2 tie to open the season, but this time around 2 goals may be enough to win it.  The puck drops at Yackel/West Side at 4:50 pm next Sunday.

AHA D2 Playoff Format Release

The AHA has finalized the playoff format for the 2009-10 D2 season and now 6 teams are in.
Dates of Tournament:  Tuesday, April 6th - Sunday, April 11th
Location: Most weekend games played at Bloomington Ice Gardens
Championship Games: Sunday, April 11th,. Bloomington Ice Gardens, Time TBD
D2 Format:  Top 6 Teams from Regular Season Advance to Playoffs. One Pool with all 6 Teams, Round Robin. Higher Seeds have favorable schedule in Round Robin Play as not all teams will play each other.  Top Two Teams from the 3 Round Robin games will Play on Sunday for D2 Tier Title.

Currently, the Horde are tied at the top of the division, but with half the season to go all 12 teams are still in the playoff hunt.  The Horde will need to play well to make the playoffs at season end.

Horde Tame Icedogs - Tied for Top of the League

St. Paul (SPA-Drake Ice Rink) – Saturday, January 16, 2010.  On a warm, Minnesota January night, the Northern Horde returned to St. Paul Academy/Drake Arena to face the top-ranked Icedogs, a week after defeating the top-ranked Nighthawks.  Once again, the stout Horde defense led the team to victory.  The Horde played very well in the first period and, with some intense pressure on the Icedogs goalie, opened the scoring at 12:02 of the first when Jeff Nelson followed a Tyler LaMont shot.  Dana Cudo picked up the other assist on the goal.  Just two minutes later, Mark Paska crashed the net to give the Horde a two goal lead – assists to Dana Cudo and Jeff Nelson.  The second period was all Icedogs for the first 12 minutes as they scored one and kept up the pressure against goalie Pete Morrow; however, all that would change when Dan Bolles got a long pass from Brian Hinderks and but a nice move on the Icedogs goalie to put the Horde up 3-1.  After an Icedogs goal, Liam Monahan liked what he saw from Bolles and did the same thing with a Jon Nygren pass two minutes later.  The Horde opened the third period with a power play and Dan Bolles scored again off a pass from Liam Monahan and Jeff Nelson.  Yes, you read that right, Jeff Nelson actually had two passes in this game (leading to two assists for him and three points on the night). 

After giving up another goal to the Icedogs, the Horde D was strong the rest of the period.  With 2:24 to go in the game, the Horde committed two silly penalties.  When the Icedogs pulled their goalie to give them a 6-on-3 advantage, the Horde’s chances to hold on to victory looked bleak.  However, Cudo, Hinderks, LaMont, Zimmerman and Bolles stepped up defensively and Pete Morrow stood on his head to preserve the win before a pro-Horde crowd in that numbered in the 30s, perhaps exceeding 40.  Ryan Chester looked good in his return to the lineup following a shoulder injury that has sidelined him all season – the Horde will need his intensity at wing in the second half of the season.  Unfortunately, the Horde will lose Bill Messinger to a shoulder injury for a few weeks, but look forward to his return to the lineup.  Next Sunday, the Horde take on the Fighting Loons, which are one of the highest scoring teams in D2 and have one of the best goalies in the league.  This one should be high scoring if the Horde can muster some offense.

Eden Prairie – Sunday, January 3, 2010.  The battle for the playoffs heated up Sunday night with the Northern Horde venturing out to the western suburbs to take on the Nighthawks who were holding on to the top spot in the league having soundly defeated the Puck Hounds last week.  This week, the Nighthawks would not be so lucky.  To compensate for the Olympic ice sheet, both teams brought 15 skaters and this contest would sap the energy from all of them.  The game was scoreless until the Nighthawks scored with 2:21 remaining in the 2^nd period.  While the Horde’s efforts to that point were valiant, nothing could beat the talented Nighthawks net minder.  The third period opened with the Horde brining sustained pressure.  Finally, after killing a Jeff Nelson roughing penalty, the Horde evened the game when Mark Paska found Gary Speier at the left post with 4:40 remaining.  The goal fired up the Horde faithful (Brian’s girlfriend, out sole supporter).  1:40 later, a Chris Haack pass to Will Schultz hit the stick of Dan Kline who slid it past the Nighthawks goalie from the right point to put the Horde out in front.  After Jon Zimmerman missed an empty net from 10 feet out, the Nighthawks earned a face-off in the Horde end with 16 seconds remaining.  Following a timeout, the Horde D stoned the Nighthawk skaters and Pete Morrow made his 18^th and most crucial save of the night to preserve the victory and move the Northern Horde into 2^nd place in the standings.  Once again, the Horde defense was stout as the Horde outshot the Nighthawks 22-18.  Suneel Arora, Brian Hinderks and Tyler LaMont kept the feared Warlick/Errigo/Brown line away from the nets and Dan Kline blocked numerous shots diving all over the ice (that could have been him tripping on the goal line as well).  Jon Nygren was huge blocking a number of Nighthawk passes and creating changes for the Horde.   Next up are the Icedogs in a battle for the top of the table.  The Icedogs’ goalie leads the league in GAA and save percentage and the Icedogs have scored the most goals in D2.  The Horde D will need to play big to come out with a victory in this one.

Horde Take Down Rivals - Beat Diablos 6-1

St. Louis Park – Saturday, December 12, 2009.  It was old home week as the Northern Horde faced their beginner school rivals, the Diablos.  Needless to say it was more of the same.  The first period was scoreless until Jon Zimmerman entered the game and fed Gary Speier on the run who knocked the pass out of the air and buried it for his first goal for the crimson and white at 1:11.  Zimmerman’s absence was due to “forgetting his skates;” however, Liam Monahan noted Zimmerman made it to the ice much too quickly for a round trip drive to St. Paul.  Dan Bolles  scored early in the second on a Liam Monahan pass, but the Diablos quickly answered.  The Diablos sub-goalie played very well in the game and kept the Horde at bay even though they had significant chances.  Finally, the Horde figured out how to beat the Diablos’ goalie and the floodgates opened in the third period.  Brian Hinderks put on a one-man show beating three Diablos with a great move from the point.  Two minutes later, Jon Nygren scored his first of the season with a blast from two inches (yes, the puck was touching the goal line).  Chris Haack and Dan Bolles added goals later in the period, capping off a four point night for Bolles.  The Diablos were able to shut down Jeff Nelson on the night, but had no answer for the rest of the team as the Northern Horde outshot the Diablos 48-14.  Netminder Pete Morrow was strong again between the pipes and had no problem finishing three pitchers at Bunny’s post-game. 

 

 

 

 

  Jeff Nelson opened the scoring at 15:47 of the first period with a breakaway goal set up a strong pass from Chris Haack.  The Ice Sages quickly tied it at one all.  After he banged one off the post two minutes later, Jon Zimmerman knocked in a Dan Kline pass from behind the net to put the Horde out in front at 9:45 of the first period.  The only goal in the second came from Jeff Nelson unassisted.  Early in the third¸ Jeff Nelson scored his first hat trick for the Horde, with Dan Kline getting his second assist of the night.  However, the Horde were not able to hold off the Sages for the rest of the period and gave up two goals.  The overtime was uneventful and the Horde walked away with one point.

Horde Let's Down Guard Late - Draws 4-4 with the Ice Sages

St. Paul Academy (Drake) – Wednesday, December 2, 2009.  In a physical game with two broken sticks and a few roughing penalties, the Northern Horde skated to a 4-4 tie with the Ice Sages.  Jeff Nelson opened the scoring at 15:47 of the first period with a breakaway goal set up a strong pass from Chris Haack.  The Ice Sages quickly tied it at one all.  After he banged one off the post two minutes later, Jon Zimmerman knocked in a Dan Kline pass from behind the net to put the Horde out in front at 9:45 of the first period.  The only goal in the second came from Jeff Nelson unassisted.  Early in the third¸ Jeff Nelson scored his first hat trick for the Horde, with Dan Kline getting his second assist of the night.  However, the Horde were not able to hold off the Sages for the rest of the period and gave up two goals.  The overtime was uneventful and the Horde walked away with one point.

Horde's D Stands Strong

Sunday, November 22, 2009, Highland Park (North Rink).  For the second week in a row, the Northern Horde defense stole the show and held the Maroons to one goal in a 5-1 win.  The scoring started early in the first when Jeff Nelson knocked down an ill advised pass from the Maroons defenseman and took it to the house to get the scoring started.  With the pressure mounting in the Maroons defensive end, Horde defensemen Tyler LaMont and Suneel Arora held the puck in at the point and fed wing Dan Bolles who beat the Maroons netminder.  Less than a minute later, defensemen Brian Hinderks picked up a Chris Haack pass in the high slot and ripped another goal giving the Horde a 3-0 lead in the first period.  At 15:26 of the second period, the Horde gave up their first shot on goal, which caught a napping Pete Morrow by surprise.  That would be the only puck to get past Morrow on a night where he would ultimately face 15 shots.  In the third, the Horde scored again when Liam Monahan, who has been on fire the past two games, scored his first goal of the season, with assists from Dana Cudo and Tyler LaMont.  Jon Zimmerman’s shot from the slot was slowed slightly by the Maroons netminder, but winger Mark Paska skated in to push it into the open net to get his first of the season to seal the victory.  Liam Monahan had the second assist on that final goal giving him a two point night.  Overall, the Horde’s forwards really stepped it up.  Will Schultz was knocking people all over the ice and Jon Nygren twice hit the post.  The D was suffocating as Dan Kline put the Maroons forwards on lock down.

Northern Horde Crush Cats

Saturday, November 17, Wakota (South St. Paul) – The energy level was high for the late night start and the Horde didn’t waste any time jumping all over the Wildcats.  30 seconds into the game Jeff Nelson put one past Wildcats netminder Casey Johnson.  Six minutes later, Tyler LaMont scored off a David Homel pass to put the Horde up 2-0.  Early in the second, the Horde drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Wildcats and Dana Cudo tipped Tyler LaMont’s shot from the point off a Jon Nygren feed to give the Horde a commanding three goal lead.  With only 3 seconds to go in the third period, Jeff Nelson scored his fifth of the season off Jon Zimmerman’s face off win to put the game away.  The Horde surrendered one in the third after captain Jon Zimmerman opened his mouth about protecting goalie Pete Morrow’s shutout, but the 33-12 shot count could not be ignored by the packed house at Wakota.  Dan Kline commented “This was the most completed game we played.”  Wildcats player Tim Meehan noted “The Horde D was suffocating, we couldn’t break out the puck all night.”  Jon Zimmerman said “When did Liam Monahan learn to play hockey?  He was all over the ice tonight creating chances and foiling the Cats – he really stepped up his game.”   Sunday, the Horde take on the Maroons at Highland with a 9:10 pm start and the Northern Horde are eagerly anticipating the return of Dan Bolles and Will Schultz to the lineup.  The Maroons lost the D2 championship game last year and the Horde are expecting a tough game.
